“Closer” - 7th Social Media Week Hamburg

The rapid development of technological progress discussed very much. Technologies that inspire us to rethink our ways of life and work are also can that intimidate and frighten us. Our experiences are more and more influenced by algorithms and artificial intelligence, and at times it may like moving away from what is at the heart of us as human beings. Our private and professional life is determined by the conflicting desire to form communities on the one hand and the striving for individualism on the other.
The 7th Social Media Week to be held Feb 26 – Mar 2, 2018 in Hamburg with the global slogan "Closer" is making this conflict between communities and individualism the subject of the conference. The aim of the discussion is to bring together diverse perspectives and drive innovation, improve consumer experiences and bring people together.
SMWHH this year will gather the participants at the location of the University of Applied Sciences Europe, in the historic building complex bahn_hoefe Ottensen that has been modernized between 2013 and 2015.

SHIFT

The promise is “No panels, no boring keynotes and no distractions from the real task at hand – engaging in meaningful conversation and building deeper relationships with other participants.” This statement indicates that the concept differs from many of the existing events of this type that are seeking to compete with others by ever growing numbers of participants. It seems that nobody is asking what kind of advantage a participant gains from attending an event with 10,000+ others.
SHIFT's aim is “to better understand the co-evolutionary relationship between humans, nature and technology, an open-air business festival gathering growing and experienced entrepreneurs and professionals from the entrepreneurship ecosystem.” To achieve the better understanding, SHIFT facilitates a platform connecting potential with success. The idea to organize such an event started in late 2014 and the event has been growing steadily from zero to 4000 attendees in 2017 – although on the website the organizers gives “5 reasons why not to attend SHIFT”.
The festival features two days full of meaningful conversations, a stage program, round-table discussions and workshops, in addition to several side events, networking sessions as well as after parties.
